đ§ 9-Stop Self-Guided Route:
1. Port of Delos / Island Entrance
Step off the boat and enter a sacred island untouched by modern development. You’ll arrive at a small dock, pass through the ticket booth, and enter the ancient city via a stone-paved path.
2. Agora of the Competaliasts
Explore Delosâ ancient marketplaceâa bustling square once lined with merchant stalls, shrines, and statues honoring Hermes. These were the heart of trade during the islandâs peak.
3. Sanctuary of Apollo
Walk the ancient Sacred Way to reach the ruins of temples built in Apolloâs honor. Look for the massive columns, altars, and sacred inscriptions scattered throughout this vast religious zone.
4. Terrace of the Lions
Delosâ most iconic siteâfive proud marble lions still guard the dry bed of the Sacred Lake. Originally there were up to a dozen of them. Their fierce posture symbolizes protection of the divine birthplace nearby.
5. House of Dionysus (Mosaic Villas)
Marvel at stunning floor mosaics inside this ancient Roman home, including the famous image of Dionysus riding a panther. These ruins offer a glimpse into the luxurious life of Delosâ wealthiest citizens.
6. Temple of Isis
Climb a rocky path to reach the peaceful ruins of this Egyptian temple dedicated to Isis. From here, enjoy sweeping views over the harbor and lower city while appreciating Delos’ multicultural spiritual influence.
7. Theatre of Delos
Descend into the remains of a 5,000-seat amphitheater nestled into the hillside. You can still sit on the stone seats once used by ancient audiences to view Greek dramas performed under open skies.
8. Mount Kynthos Summit
Ready for a short, steep climb? The trail to the top of Mount Kynthos rewards you with epic 360° views of the surrounding Cyclades. Legend says Zeus once stood here to watch over his domain.
9. Sacred Lake (now dry) & Return Path
Circle back toward the Sacred Lakeâonce believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The lake is dry now, but the setting remains powerfully symbolic. Wrap up your hike near the Archaeological Museum of Delos (optional), then return to the ferry dock.
