The Terrace of the Lions is one of Delos’s most iconic monuments. Erected around 600 BCE by the people of Naxos, this sacred avenue once held twelve marble lions facing east toward Apollo’s sanctuary.
Only five lions remain on site today, but their role is still unmistakable: they were guardians of the sanctuary and symbols of power on the island’s ceremonial route. Look closely and you can still see Archaic details in the carving, including worn manes and almond-shaped eyes.
