  • Location: Western Nevada, just west of Reno (Verdi) through downtown Reno to Sparks
  • Distance: ~13 miles (can be shortened—multiple easy access points)
  • Class: I–II (mellow float, riffles, with some playful waves in Reno at higher flows)
  • Best Season: Spring to early summer (April–July); paddleable year-round but best with higher flows (400+ cfs at Reno gauge)
  • Character: Scenic mix of forests, parks, and city; clear water, wildlife, and some small surf waves in urban sections

Section Breakdown

  • Put-In: Crystal Peak Park, Verdi, NV (ample parking, bathrooms, easy access)
  • Take-Out: Rock Park, Sparks, NV (large park, beach, restrooms, lots of parking)
  • Distance: ~13 river miles (plan 4–6 hours; can be split up)

Alternate Access/Exit Points:

  • Mayberry Park (Reno): ~3.5 miles from Verdi
  • Dorostkar Park, Idlewild Park, Wingfield Park (downtown Reno, great for playboating or short floats)
  • Barbara Bennett Park, Fisherman’s Park, Cottonwood Park (east Reno/Sparks)

River Features & Scenery

  • Scenery: Cottonwood forests, desert meadows, riverfront parks, occasional mountain views
  • Wildlife: Geese, herons, ducks, ospreys, trout, the occasional muskrat or beaver
  • Urban excitement: Float through the heart of downtown Reno, under old railroad bridges, and through the Reno Whitewater Park

  1. Verdi to Mayberry Park
    • Meandering, shaded; easy Class I riffles; sandy banks
  2. Mayberry Park to Idlewild Park
    • Slightly quicker current, fun for SUPs, canoes, rec kayaks
  3. Reno Whitewater Park (Wingfield Park)
    • Multiple play waves, man-made drops (Class II at moderate flows)
    • Good for park-and-play, easy to scout and portage if new to whitewater
  4. Idlewild Park to Fisherman’s Park
    • Urban parks, fun wave trains at spring flows, easy exits
  5. Fisherman’s Park to Rock Park (Sparks)
    • Slows down, wide river, occasional riffles; lots of birdlife, popular with SUPs and casual kayakers

Flow & Conditions

  • Optimal flows: 400–1,200 cfs for all crafts; below 300 cfs may be bony in places; above 1,500 cfs river moves fast—be attentive near bridges and play features.
  • Check real-time flows: USGS Reno Gauge or Dreamflows Truckee
  • Water temperature: Cold in spring/early summer; wetsuit/splash gear recommended until June.
  • Hazards: Urban debris, submerged logs after storms, fishermen and swimmers, bridges, and occasional shopping carts.

Trip Planning & Logistics

  • Shuttle:
    • Take two cars, or bike the Reno Truckee River Path (excellent bike shuttle paralleling the river)
    • Drive time Verdi–Sparks: ~20 minutes via I-80
  • Parking:
    • Ample at Crystal Peak Park (Verdi) and Rock Park (Sparks)
    • All intermediate parks have public lots, though some can fill on busy weekends
  • Amenities:
    • Restrooms at most major parks
    • Food/drink options near Mayberry, Idlewild, and especially downtown Reno (walk to cafes, breweries, restaurants)

Access & Regulations

  • No permit needed for private kayaks/SUPs/canoes
  • Alcohol prohibited in city parks and on river during special events (check local regs)
  • Life jackets required for all minors; strongly recommended for all paddlers
  • Dogs allowed in most parks (on leash)

Gear Recommendations

  • Recreational or whitewater kayak, SUP, canoe, or raft (all suitable at moderate flows)
  • Paddle, PFD (life jacket), helmet (recommended in Reno whitewater park)
  • Dry bag for essentials, sun protection, water, snacks
  • Wetsuit in early season; lightweight splash gear in summer

Safety Tips

  • Scout Reno Whitewater Park if you haven’t run it before (easy walk/bike path along river)
  • Be aware of tubers and swimmers, especially on hot days
  • Bridges and low-head dams: All main bridges are navigable at normal flows, but always keep an eye out for hazards
  • Always paddle with a friend or group—urban river, but help is not instant
  • Afternoon wind can make last few miles into Sparks a challenge—start early

  • Early mornings = wildlife and quieter river
  • Bike shuttle: Truckee River path is fast, scenic, and safe
